Dotted notes
Dotted notes
A dot adds half of the original duration to a note or rest. A dotted half note therefore lasts three quarter-note beats.
Count the added half
Name the original value first, then add half of it. A dotted quarter equals a quarter note plus an eighth note.
Practice
- Say “quarter plus eighth”.
- Clap the resulting rhythm.
- Play it with a metronome without extending the rest.
Start slowly and use your ear to check what you have read.
