Seventh chords
Seventh chords
A seventh chord adds another third above a triad. It therefore contains four different pitch classes rather than three.
Build the chord in layers
Find the triad first, then add the seventh above the root. This makes it easier to hear the note that creates tension and where it may resolve.
Practice
- Play the triad alone.
- Add the upper third.
- Compare different seventh-chord qualities.
Start slowly and use your ear to check what you have read.
