Basic cadences
Basic cadences
A cadence is a harmonic pattern that closes a phrase or points it forward. Even a simple chord sequence can feel like a question and an answer.
Hear function, not only names
Start by comparing a stable tonic, motion toward the dominant, and a return to the tonic. Direction and expectation matter more than memorizing labels away from music.
Practice
- Play the tonic and stop.
- Add the dominant and feel the tension.
- Return to the tonic and describe the change.
Start slowly and use your ear to check what you have read.
