Syncopation basics
Syncopation basics
Syncopation places an accent or note onset on a weak beat or between beats. The rhythm feels intentionally displaced.
Keep the pulse first
Do not try to guess a complex pattern at once. Count even subdivisions, clap the underlying pulse, and add the notes between beats afterwards.
Practice
- Tap a steady pulse with your foot.
- Speak the strong beats aloud.
- Add the displaced note without changing the counting speed.
Start slowly and use your ear to check what you have read.
